As we never stop learning, here is something I have been educated on by a friend recently.
The Dirty Dozen…
No it’s not a movie!
It’s a list of fruit and vegetables most contaminated with nasty chemicals. It blows my mind that we have to go looking for this information and considering how long we have been mindful of what food our kids eat, I almost can’t believe it’s taken me this long to learn about it.
So Who or what is the Dirty Dozen exactly?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) publish The Dirty Dozen each year, listing the fruit and vegetables most contaminated with nasty chemicals. These chemicals come from pesticides and herbicides used on the farms which grow the produce. If you would like to check it out yourself Click Here.
EWG'S DIRTY DOZEN FOR 2020
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Kale
- Nectarines
- Apples
- Grapes
- Peaches
- Cherries
- Pears
- Tomatoes
- Celery
- Potatoes
Basically if you can only afford to buy a few organic fruit and vegetables, start with the ones on this list. However, if you are anything like us and go through a lot of fruit and vegetables (especially having kids that eat a heap!), wash them thoroughly using a natural plant-based wash. If you would like to know what we use hit the contact me button at the end of this post.
So not only is there a dirty dozen list for food there is also a dirty dozen list for harmful chemicals found in products around our home, cleaning, personal care you name it!!!
As this is a lot of information be sure to check out our next blog post on this other Dirty Dozen…
